Pindari Glacier Trek is an Moderate to Difficult trek in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. This trek offers well-defined trails with only one minor pass crossing en route to the Pindari Glacier Dhakuri Pass and chance to experience the quaint village life of Uttarakhand Kumoun region in beautiful Khati Village. The views from the pass the Dhakri Khal (2830m) – are particularly impressive and include the many snow-capped peaks that form the southern rim of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. The trek to Pindari Glacier is one such trekking trail that will take you through the spectacular landscapes, snow clad glaciers, and far-flung villages of the Kumaon region, which you might have only seen in the fairy tales and will remain etched in the mind for life!

The best part of the trekking trail of Pindari Glacier is that it doesn't test your endurance at every level, it's smooth most of the times. But, don't consider it as a cake walk as the degree difficulty sometimes increases so much that it pushes trekkers to put off their comfort zone. The trail becomes challenging and requires crossing mountain ridges, spider-walls, and streams. However, the unearthly beauty of the final point or Zero Point shall make you forget all the hardships.

Your trek to this Himalayan storehouse, Pindari Glacier, starts from Loharkhet, a tiny village which is 20 km away from the Bageshwar district. After crossing a series of remote places like Dhakuri, Dwali, and Phurkia, you will touch the final destination of the trek, Zero Point. Trails that leads to the glacier, through rhododendron forests, transverse along the southern wilderness of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary offering impressive views of peaks like Panwali Dwar (6,683m) and Maiktoli (6,803m).

Best Time to Visit Pindari Glacier Trek

Summer (Mid-March to Mid-June):Perhaps the best time to go for trekking as trekkers can easily brave the weather.

Monsoon (Mid June- September):During the monsoon season, the trails remain closed, and trekkers should strictly avoid going to trekking during monsoon because hazards like rain, landslide and road blockage can make it tough to make through the route.

Spring (September to late October):Pleasant weather is what trekkers can expect during the spring season.

Winter (October to Mid March):Temperature can drop as low as (-10) °C, thus there are chances of snowfall due to which roads remain closed.


In the initial days of the pre monsoon season (Apr-Jun) there will be snow along the trail which generally melts by end April. Days are going to be sunny and warm (14-22 °C) while the night temperature at the highest campsite would be in the range of 0-8 °C. In the post monsoon season (Sep-Nov) there is possibility of snow towards the end of the season, which also melts very fast. The days are sunny with temperatures hovering around (12-20 °C) and the evenings start getting cold with the onset of October and nights are comparatively cooler (-2 to 8 °C).

Loharkhet (1760m) – Kharkiya (2500m) – Khati (2210m) (Drive / 45min- 1 hr) (Trek / 2 hrs)

Khati (2210m) – Dwali ( 2575m) ( Trek / 5-6 hrs)

Day 4
Dwali (2575m) - Phurkiya (3250m) (Trek/ 3-4 hrs)

Day 5
Phurkiya (3250) - Pindari Glacier Zero Point (3670m) - Phurkiya (3250m) (Trek / 6-7 hours)

Day 6
Phurkiya (3250m) - Dwali (2575m) - Khati (2210m) (Trek / 7-8hrs)

Day 7
Khati (2210m) - Kharkiya (2500m) - Bageshwar (1004m) - Kathgodam (554m) (Trek / 2 hrs ) ( Drive195 km / 8 hrs)

Day 1: Drive From Kathgodam To Loharkhet via Almora

  • Altitude: 5500 ft.
  • Drive:  180 km (7-8 hrs)
  • Time taken:  Start at 06.00 am Reach Loharkhet by 3-4 pm.
  • Stay: Check in Hotel

Early morning we board our cabs to take a picturesque mountain drive to reach the remote settlement of Loharkhet, passing by Almora, Bagheswar, Suong. We reach by evening. One of our staffs receives you and guides you to your hotel room. After freshening up, we meet over a light snacks and tea and share few updates on the trek. We have early dinner and go to bed. Tomorrow's gonna be a hard day right away. So we prepare ourselves mentally for the game

Day 02- Loharkhet to Kahrkia (Drive) and Trek to Khati

  • Altitude:  7300 ft
  • Drive: 3 hrs
  • Trek: 4 km, 1-2 hrs trek
  • Trek gradient: Easy
  • Water sources: You can refill your water bottles from streams on the way.
  • Stay: Overnight stay in tents.

Today we will begin our Pindari Glacier trek from Loharkhet after having breakfast. We drive from Loharkhet to Kharkia which is a 3 hour drive along the road you will see Rhondendron as well oak trees and drive generally take around 3 hours to reach Kharkia from where our trek begins. Through the first day savour the Great Himalayan Range , including the peaks of Trisul, Devtoli, Maiktoli and Nanda Khat that form the southern rim of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. Earlier From Loharket (1760m) the trail winds through an evergreen forest of oak and horse chestnut before ascending to the small temple at Taladhakri (2300m). This is the halfway point on the ascent to the Dhakri Khal. Beyond Taladhakri the trail ascends across meadows and rhododendron forest that bloom by late April. The gradient lessens towards the Dhakri Khal. The meadow of Dhakri (2680m) lies just below the pass but as the new road is there we skip Dhakuri Pass Trek.

Today’s trek is easy and a rewarding, peep into village life at Khati Village. Khati is the largest and last village on the Pindari Glacier trek and Kafni Glacier trek. Khati village is situated on the banks of Pindar Ganga River at an altitude of 2210m. Enjoy your stay in Khati Village by interacting with villagers and visiting the Khati Village temple.

Day 3: Trek From Khati Village to Dwali Camp

  • Altitude:  8600 ft
  • Trek: 13 km, 6-7 hrs trek
  • Trek gradient: Moderate level
  • Water sources:You can refill your water bottles from streams on the way.
  • Stay: Overnight stay in tents.

Today’s trek is going to be an amazing experience with the sound of Pindari Ganga not too far off, After trekking for almost 6 km from Khati you have to cross Pindari at Maliyahound. Throughout the way trekkers will spot the wooden bridges and waterfalls. You can also have cup of tea from the small tea stall available over here. Finally, after a lengthy trek and higher altitude, you will reach near to the second bridge on the Pindari River, right across which is Dwali. This is one of the well maintained bridge.

Dwali Camp is located on a site from where you’ll be can see the entire Pindari Valley on one side and Kafni Valley on the other side. Pindar Ganga from Pindar Valley and Kafni River from Kafni Valley merge at the village. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 4: Trek From Dwali To Phurkia Top

  • Altitude:  10,500 ft
  • Trek: 5 km, 3-4 hrs trek
  • Trek gradient: Easy level
  • Water sources: None. Carry 2 litres of water
  • Stay: Overnight stay in tents.

Dwali to Phurkia trek route is stiff ascending. In month of April to Mid-May this whole area and beyond cover with snow so at that time trekking little difficult but we can manage it with our endurance. You constantly gain height and wind chiller. Phurkia is the last campsite of this trek. Sleep early sow we start our trek early in the morning. Overnight stay in here.

Day 5: Trek From Phurkia To Zeropoint Pindari Glacier and return To Phurkia

  • Altitude:  12,300 ft
  • Trek: 16 km, 7-8 hrs trek
  • Trek gradient: Moderate to Difficult level (Challenging day of the trek)
  • Water sources:You can refill your water bottles from streams on the way.
  • Stay: Overnight stay in tents.

We start trek very early in the morning for Pindari Glacier Zero point after breakfast. You left your bag in camp with take only water bottle and packed lunch with you. The trek route not much difficult but due to thin air you face some problem. Which normal in High altitude trek.

Once we reach Zero point we find the spellbound views of Mt Baljuri, Mt Panwali Dwar, Nanda Kot and full view of Pindari Glacier. After enjoying the beauty snow-capped mountain then visit Pindari Baba Ashram take some rest here and then trek back to Phurkia. Overnight stay in Tent.

Zero Point on Pindari Glacier Trek is basically the end point from where you get to see the view of Mt. Nandakhat, Pindari Glacier which is 5 Km long. When you are standing at Zero Point and looking towards snout of Pindar Ganga then on your left across the river is Baljuri Peak, Just in front of you is Mt. Changuch and it’s Glacier on your right are Nanda Kot and Nanda Bhanar peak but are not visible from zero point. We trek back to Phurkia by the same route and takes around 2 hours to reach our camp.

Day 6:  Trek From Phurkia To Khati Village via Dwali

  • Altitude:  7,300 ft
  • Trek: 18 km, 7-8 hrs trek
  • Trek gradient: Moderate level of gradual descent.
  • Water sources: None. Carry 2 litres of water.
  • Stay: Overnight stay in tents.

Today will be one of the longest trekking days on this trek where you'll have to walk for almost 18 kms as we'll be coming from Phurkia to Khati. It is a 7-8 hour trek and we'll begin by having our morning breakfast. We'll be descending from Phurkiya to Dwali which will take less than 2 hours and then from Dwali to Khati which is a 4-5 hours stretch.

Day 7: Trek From Khati Village To Kharkia and Drive back to Kathgodam

  • Altitude: 7,400 ft
  • Drive:  180 km (7-8 hrs)
  • Time taken: 4 km/1 hour trek


After breakfast it’s the time to say goodbye to Khati Village and start the trek to Loharkhet via Dhakuri. Plan your day accordingly so that you reach Kathgodam by evening. Khati to Kharkia will be a one hour trek. From Kharkia pickup facility will be arranged to take you back to Kathgodam.

Since it is a high altitude trek, at least 3 layers of clothing is mandatory. A full sleeve shirt, a fleece jacket, and a padded jacket are imperative. An additional layer (Thermal bodywarmers) for the evenings in the high altitude campsites are strongly recommended

    • Sunscreen lotion, lip balm, toothbrush, toothpaste, hand sanitizer, toilet roll, cold cream, small towel.
    • Anti-fungal cream: Carry an antifungal cream if you are sensitive to sweating and prone to skin irritations around genitals or groin area due to lack of bathing.
    • For women:
      • Tampons or sanitary napkins,
      • 2-3 zip pouches to dispose off non-biodegradable waste
      • Vaginal wash to avoid any irritation due to lack of bathing.

    • Personal medicine kit. Though our trek leaders carry a fully equipped first-aid kit, make sure you consult your doctor before the trek in case you have any special ailment.

Fitness Required for Pindari Glacier Trek

At high altitude as the air gets thinner oxygen becomes less abundant.The percentage saturation of hemoglobin with oxygen determines the content of oxygen in our blood. After the human body reaches around 2,100 m (7,000 feet) above sea level, the level of  oxygen in our hemoglobin begins to plummet. However, the human body has both short-term and long-term adaptations to altitude that allow it to partially compensate for the lack of oxygen. The Pindari Glacier Trek is an challenging trek suitable for trekkers with prior experience in high altitude treks is recommended.

Who Can Go:-

Here are the fitness criteria for conquering Pindari Glacier Trek:

  • Experience of any high altitude trek at least 1 trek
  • The climber must be fit and have sufficient stamina to cover 5 km of distance in 30 minutes.
  • Trekker should be able to carry a 10 to 15 kg bag pack
  • Heart problem, high blood pressure, asthma, and epilepsy cannot be reconciled on this mission. Trekker must not have these conditions mentioned above

Breathing exercises

If you’re trekking to Pindari Glacier Trek , note that the temperature drops to around -8 to 10 degree Celcius at night. During the day, the temperature will be at around 10 to 15 degrees. While going for summit the extreme temperature could make breathing slightly difficult. Doing breathing exercises before the trek will help. Expand your lungs and learn to breathe deep. This will help you inhale more oxygen and help you breathe comfortably.

Fitness exercises

  • Jog/Run for 5 Kms in 25-30 mins or Walk continuously for 10 km (with 3-4 small breaks) on plain terrain (slight incline is better)
  • Hold your breath for 40 seconds
  • 3 sets of Climbing 30 – 40 steps in one stretch
  • Push Ups – 10
  • Lunges & Squats – 15 X 2 sets

The Pindari Glacier Trek is graded moderate-difficult. If you have registered for this trek, then here is some information that you must know in order to have a safe trek. At SYTH, we believe that as long as you are well-informed and well-prepared, you can survive easily at high altitudes.

This trek starts at an altitude of 10,055 ft. You are already in rarefied air and will be covering long distances. With significant altitude gain there are chances of being hit by Acute Mountain Sickness. An average trekking day here covers a distance of 10-13 km. The trail of Pindari Glacier Trekis especially tricky. The route on the glacier keeps changing and having an experienced guide here is a must. Most of the trek has glacial residue of moraines and scree – which is difficult to walk on.

Monitoring health on a trek

Any abnormal reading will be paid special attention to and action will be taken immediately.

On the trek, your Trek Leader will be monitoring two aspects a day.

  • Oxygen Level
  • Pulse Rate 

High Altitude Medical Kit

Your trek leader will also be carrying a full-fledged high altitude medical kit. This will include basic medicines and specific medicines catering to altitude sickness – Diamox, DexamethasoneYour Trek Leader will also be carrying a portable oxygen cylinder throughout the trek. In addition to that, there are oxygen cylinders installed at all high campsites for any emergency situations.

Acclimatisation in high  altitude

This is one of the most important aspects of travelling in the high Himalayas and cannot be ignored or set aside. Acclimatisation basically means our body adjusting to lower levels of oxygen (rarefied air) & reduced air pressure as me move up. In case one does not acclimatise properly there are chances of the person facing extreme discomfort and this can be fatal in extreme cases. While there is no set route to getting properly acclimatised there are a general precautions and steps that one can take to initiate good acclimatisation.

The Kathgodam station is one of the main stations in the district and it is an old station. It has good connectivity to many places and these include Lucknow, Delhi, and Howrah. Tickets from Delhi to Kathgodam by train cost around Rs. 150 for a second class sleeper ticket and Rs. 400 for a third A/C sleeper ticket. It is essential to book the tickets at least one month in advance as this route is always in demand.

By Air:Nearest airport is Pantnagar Airport, around 205 km from Bageshwar.

By Train :-
From Delhi take the Ranikhet Express (5014) Dep. Delhi at 10:40pm arrival Kathgodam at 5:30am (Overnight Journey) or the Uttar sampark kranti (5035) Dep. Delhi at 4:00pm arrival Kathgodam at 10:40pm (6 hrs.40min.Journey)


By Bus :-

Regular buses ply from ISBT Delhi Anand Vihar station to Kathgodam. Buses that go to Nainital stops at Haldwani which is a twin town of Kathgodham (8 hrs. Journey).

Usually buses drop you at Haldwani bus staiton. From there you have to come to Kathgodham Railway Station which is 4km away.
